Do I feel shame?

What are we watching this week?

We are listening to Brené Brown’s empowering Ted Talk, Listening to Shame.

At I Am Here, we are interested in Brené’s exploration of shame and vulnerability. Her researched view is that “vulnerability is our most accurate measurement of courage.” We are also interested in how her Talk links to one of I Am Here’s five CLEAR skills; Empathy. Brown suggests that Empathy is the antidote to shame.

“If we’re going to find our way back to each other, we have to understand and know empathy, because empathy’s the antidote to shame. If you put shame in a petri dish, it needs three things to grow exponentially: secrecy, silence, and judgment. If you put the same amount in a petri dish and douse it with empathy, it can’t survive.”

What are we reading this week?

We’ve been reading Arlin Cuncic’s article, The Psychology of Shame. It explores what shame is, the types and signs of shame, the shaming of others, and how, ultimately, to overcome shame.

The idea of the hot response resonated with us. Sometimes, we instinctively react instead of taking a moment to pause, reflect, and respond. Our course, I Am Here for Me: Self-Checks, can teach you how to give yourself that moment to stop reacting and start responding. We would love to hear your thoughts on it.

What are we quoting this week?

“Why do we fall? So that we can learn to pick ourselves up.”

– Batman Begins

This quote struck a chord with us. To get where we want to be, do we need to go somewhere we haven’t been to before? Is falling down the first step to getting up? How can we use any shame we might feel to benefit us in a positive way? What do you think?

It’s ok to not feel ok; and it’s absolutely ok to ask for help.
