Perspectives on Wellbeing and Growth

What are we looking at this week?

Many leaders are trying to make their workplace more inclusive. But what exactly does ‘inclusion’ mean? Is integration the same thing?

This graphic, shared by Catherine Ann Reid, beautifully displays the difference between inclusion and its opposites – exclusion, segregation and integration.

In the integration circle, for example, the dots (representing people) believed to be included because they are within the outer boundary, still have a border around them. While these people have been brought into the outer circle, they’re still seen as ‘others.’ We see the same border in the case of segregation, though in this case there is no attempt at inclusion.

Let’s think about our lives and workplaces. Are there people we believe are integrated but to whom we might not be giving real opportunities to join in? Is your workplace truly inclusive?

Remember I Am Here’s goal – to change the world; one compassionate connection at a time.

What are we watching this week?

Can getting back to nature improve your mental health and wellbeing?

In this video, Sir David Attenborough states that nature can have a positive impact on us. The natural world is a source of comfort, happiness, confidence and relaxation, and helps with healing. There is very strong evidence, Attenborough tells us, that people who spend time with the natural world benefit mentally to an extraordinary degree.

I Am Here wants to change beliefs and practices about mental health and wellbeing. One source of this wellbeing is nature. Use opportunities to connect with nature. We don’t have to go far to find nature, as it is everywhere – we just need to look.

What are we quoting this week?

“There are at least 4 types of wealth:

  1. Financial wealth (money)
  2. Social wealth (status)
  3. Time wealth (freedom)
  4. Physical wealth (health)

Be wary of jobs that lure you in with 1 and 2, but rob you of 3 and 4.”
